Virginia Academy of Violin 5 - Jim Ling

 Jim Ling

About the Virginia Academy of Violin

"Teaching Students the Way They Learn."

Jim Ling has been performing, studying, and mastering the violin and viola for the last 40 years. He's performed in Symphony Orchestras, Chamber Orchestras, String Quartets, and Solo Recitals.

For more than 30 years Jim has been mastering the art of teaching both Traditional and Suzuki Violin methods for students, as young as 4, online or in person in Northern Virginia.

The insights from teaching, plus being the father of two teenage girls, as well as his studies of influence and motivation, give him an awareness of the changing psychological needs of music students which makes him able to fit the instruction to suit the student in a way that is appropriate, positive, and gets results.

Jim is exceptionally proud of his students. Mr. Ling's students consistently place highly in their school orchestras, seating auditions, regional and district orchestras, and youth orchestras, some of them going on to the Virginia All-State Orchestra and even winning university music scholarships.

Jim Ling's students consistently place highly in school orchestras, seating auditions, and regional & district orchestras. My students have won Virginia All-State Orchestras auditions and university music scholarships.

2. Experience, Master's Degree

A highly qualified instructor can give beginners the proper foundation that avoids years of frustration and guide the more advanced student to polish and perfect the skills required for beautiful, virtuoso performances.

3. Performance Preparation

Lessons cover all the essential qualities and skills that will eventually develop a musician capable of confidant, polished performances, whether on the concert stage, auditions or playing exams. A partial list includes:

  • Focus

  • Technique

  • Memorization

  • Listening

  • Sight Reading

  • Poise

  • Stage Manners

  • Ensemble Skills

  • Rhythmic Training

  • Comfortable Posture

  • And Much More!

4. Focus on Learning

I teach so you can learn and play. The Virginia Academy of Violin is not a violin shop or general music store: I do not rent or sell instruments. This means I specialize in providing the highest quality of musical instruction.

5. All ages are welcome!

Yes, I have young students who are very advanced. I am also very happy to teach the older beginner and intermediate students and have often seen them make extraordinary progress.

6. Regular Performances

Having a least three concerts or recitals each year keeps students focused and motivated to share their accomplishments and inspiration with their friends and family.
